TIPS AND TOOLS FOR VIEWING VIDEO ON THE INTERNET

  • What does this >> 56k | 100K | 300 mean?

These numbers refer to line speed.
The video clips are prepared differently for each speed.
For higher speeds, a higher resolution clip has been prepared, because more information can be delivered in a quicker time.  So the video prepared for higher speeds has better picture quality and can be viewed at a larger size (in a larger window) without looking crummy.
If you have a slow line speed and little patience, choose the lowest speed and watch a clip that has been prepared at a lower resolution in a small window.
You can choose the 300K clip even though you only have access to a slow line speed, it just means that you'll have to wait a while before it starts to play.

Because we're largely restricted to land-lines in South Africa, our line speeds do not compare favourably with line speeds in countries like U.S.A. and and those in Europe.

  • Buffering:

When video downloads, it may begin playing before the entire clip has downloaded.  This is because of a buffering capacity.  Once a chunk of info of a certain size has been delivered, the video will probably start to play, while the rest of the video info is being delivered.  This first play-though may be a little jerky, because it's coming in chunks.  The next play through should be smooth.
